Titled Like a Bird, the book follows Taylia Chatterjee, a woman who grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side with her older sister and emotionally distant parents. Taylia is a victim of sexual assault who is disowned by her family and forced to move out as a result. On her own in the city, she begins working at a café while being haunted by the ghosts of her past and of her Indian grandmother.
